起初，他們把魔掌伸向共產黨人，我沒有說話，因為我不是共產黨員；
接著，他們把魔掌伸向猶太人，我沒有說話，因為我不是猶太人；
然後，他們把魔掌伸向貿易工會，我沒有說話，因為我不是貿易工會主義者；
再來，他們把魔掌伸向舊教徒，我仍沒有說話，因為我是一個新教徒。
最後，他們將魔掌伸向了我，這時，已經沒有人站起來為我說話了。

In Germany they came first for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I
wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't
a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I was a
Protestant.
Then they came for me--and by that time no one was left to speak up.
